Eating for Pregnancy

Effective Communication with Your Child Parts 1& 2
Rachel Malinowitzer, MEd
It's very difficult to believe that you're being heard by your children when you have to repeat things several times before they respond. Within this workshop we will focus on developing more meaningful and effective language skills so that your children will respond more cooperatively. We will also explore the ways in which to listen in order to allow your children to feel safe enough to talk to you. Communication is the key and we will unlock some of the secrets to keep the liens of communication open.
Expectant Parents Workshop

Taught by the author of City Baby Brooklyn: The Ultimate Guide for Parents from Pregnancy through Preschool--Are you expecting? Wondering what you really need for the new baby? If so, sign up for this Expectant Parenting workshop, which will cover all of the essentials on what to get for your new arrival and where to get it in Brooklyn.
There will also be a discussion on what to expect after you bring your baby home, and will address topics such as how to find a lactation consultant, a local mommies group, and tips for surviving the first few weeks. The class also offers you a chance to bond with other expectant parents. The cost is $25 for Expectant Mom only. $40 per couple. Sign up at least a week in advance

Financial Planning

Gina Stormont, Agent of New York Life Insurance Company, will provide information regarding insurance planning as part of your larger financial picture. Ms. Stormont will include a discussion on who should consider life, disability*, and long term care insurance, how to determine the appropriate types and amount for you. She will also discuss tax treatments and the many uses for insurance.

Want a real-life look at the preschool years through the eyes of a preschooler? Role play, parenting tips
Infant & Child CPR
This course focuses on the special application of cardiac and breathing emergency skills to infants and children through the age of 8. You'll learn how to reduce the risk of injury or death by properly identifying breathing and cardiac emergencies and administering the appropriate CPR measures. Infant/Child CPR is indispensable for parents (especially new parents), day care providers, babysitters and nannies, grade school teachers and staff, and anyone else who is in frequent contact with infants and small children.
Participants will have a small adult manikin and an infant manikin to work with. The course contains information provided by a video as well as hands on practice. Part one of the courses teaches the skills as applied to the child and part two teaches the skills as applied to the infant. The participants will also receive a booklet and a skills card for future reference.
At the end of the course, participants will take a 30-question exam based information presented in the course. Participants must pass the exam with a grade of 80% or better in order to get a certification card. This ARC (American Red Cross) certificate is valid for 1 year.

Come to this fun class and you'll also find out how you can give your family the best opportunity for eating well without spending a fortune. The class will shed light on many of the concerns that we face when feeding our families.
The Many Faces of Anger (1-5)

What are the roots of parental anger? Identify triggers, change patterns, practice appropriate responses.
Families First will present an intensive 5-session series on anger in the family. Brooklyn Heights therapist, Rachel Malinowitzer, MEd will help parents explore the many faces of parental anger and its impact on children.
The group will discuss the roots of parental anger, how to detect triggers, alter erroneous thought patterns, practice ways of expressing anger effectively and learn how to minimize the effects of anger expressed inappropriately. Parents will learn how to recognize the triggers for anger in their children as well.
It is imperative that interested parents commit to attending all five sessions upon registration. This important series will meet on 5 Monday evenings from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. The series will cost $100 per person for Families First members, $125 for non-members. Advance registration is necessary. Register and pay at least 2 weeks prior to the first meeting date of the workshop.

Secrets to a Good Nights Sleep

Megan Faure, Occupational Therapist and co-author of the best selling book Baby Sense, it covers the sleep cycles and how sleep develops and looks at both day and night sleep patterns. It deals with the young infant right through to the older baby (when sleep problems often arise).
Practical application includes: What parents can expect from their babies at different ages, how to set the scene for good sleep habits, approaching sleep from a sensory perspective, the importance of day sleeps and a guideline as to when they should sleep and solutions for sleep problems.

Former special educator and disability rights attorney Jo Anne Simon will help you sort through the maze. US and NYS laws provide for a vast and often confusing array of educational and therapeutic services for children with special needs. Jo Anne will help you navigate the shoals, understand your rights and offer tips on how to protect your child's ability to receive a free appropriate public education.
Jo Anne Simon is an attorney in private practice concentrating in disability rights litigation and consultation in education, high stakes standardized testing and employment matters. A former disabled student services director, sign language interpreter and teacher of disabled children, she is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Fordham Law School. She was lead counsel to the plaintiff in Bartlett v. New York State Board of Law Examiners. In March 2007, she will become President-Elect of the NY Branch-International Dyslexia Association. She writes and speaks often about disability rights and access to standardized testing in the NYC area.

Dr. Jennifer Jones is a specialist in child development and a dynamic speaker with a simple, powerful message. In addition to having been a teacher and university professor, she has designed 10 new public and private schools, trained thousands of teachers, consulted for institutions and governments here and abroad, and worked with hundreds of parents and families to help them achieve happier, more productive lives together by properly supporting the child's development. She is considered one of the most innovative educators of our generation. Her book, The Three P's of Parenting: Advice for a Lifetime, is due out in June of this year. Dr. Jones has just returned from Thailand, where she was doing a series of workshops for families from the Young Presidents' Organization.
